My grandson got this beautiful '76 Cordoba as a gift for his first car. I had sat under a tree for over 2 years and looked like the car Tilenol posted.
So we decided to clean it up. My son's mother comes out with a bucket of water and some 00 steel wool and was about to start scrubbing the paint. Good thing I was there to put the kibosh on that.

Yeah, steel wool probably shouldn't be used on paint. Ever.

I envy US car culture, getting/being given super cool rides are ones first car seems a rite of passage to many.
Here, a cool/classic car is generally seen as something you get when you retire. Until then you'll be damn happy to have a 1.0 3cyl ecoshitbox, if only for the fuel economy.

the thought of "beautiful" and "Cordoba" in the same sentence makes me woozy .

He will probably sell it (worth $7-9 thousand) and buy something he can afford to drive. It has the 2nd year Lean-Burn engine and needs constant maintenance and only gets about 8 MPG.

That's a real shame but totally understandable. Even if he can drive it for a few weeks, just for the experience i'm sure the 8MPG would be worth it. Then... onto a civic! ;)

I can pretty much guarantee he will drive it for a while. Who wouldn't. But I put a stern warning that it cannot be driven in Michigan salt/winters.
